Britons will need to start wrapping up warm as an Arctic blast is set to send temperatures plummeting next week.

In a sign that summer is well and truly over,an autumn chill is set to be accompanied by more thundery showers.

It comes after Britons were kept awake by stormy weather across the UK in the early hours of Sunday.  And forecasters are predicting that there there is more miserable weather on the way.

The Met Office has warned of the first autumnal chill coming later this week as the arctic air arrives over the coming days.

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said earlier: 'As we go through into Tuesday and Wednesday and beyond,we will start to see even cooler air begin to move in from the Arctic.

There are also 10 flood alerts in place in Wales.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris said: 'Reminiscent of this time last week, the forecast for later this weekend comes with larger uncertainties than average.

'This is due to a more complex than usual meteorological pattern involving multiple corridors of heavy, locally thundery rain revolving around a slow-moving area of low pressure.

'We are keeping warnings under review, and will look to issue them over the weekend as confidence increases,so please keep up to date with our latest forecasts and warnings.'

Cooler, fresher temperatures are widely expected across the country into next week with a generally unsettled outlook.
