A former senior NHS heart surgeon has been charged with sexually assaulting six members of staff at a hospital in Blackpool.

Amal Bose,54,was the head of the cardiovascular surgery department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital until his licence to practise medicine was suspended last year pending the outcome of a police investigation.

Lancashire Police confirmed on Tuesday that Mr Bose had been arrested and charged on May 24 with 14 counts of sexual assault against six women.

The police were first made aware of the allegations in March 2023 after being “contacted by the hospital who reported to us a number of allegations of sexual assault on employees at the Trust”.

It confirmed that it had charged Mr Bose,of Thurnham,Lancaster,as part of its investigation and that some of the allegations occurred against the same women.

“Following an investigation and after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service we have now charged a man,” a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.

“The alleged offending occurred between 2017 and 2022. Some of the counts encompass more than one incident. The alleged victims were all members of staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.”

The former cardiothoracic consultant was first arrested on March 21 last year and had conditions placed on his licence to practise by the General Medical Council, which referred his case to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

He joined Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in April 2012 and worked there for around 12 years.

Mr Bose also practised at the Lancashire Cardiac Centre and was an honorary treasurer at the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland until last year.

According to his LinkedIn social media profile,he is currently “vocationally challenged”.

Mr Bose has been bailed and will appear at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on June 7.
