The Prince of Wales enjoyed some friendly banter with King Frederik of Denmark as they watched England take on the Danes in the 2024 Euros in Frankfurt on Thursday.

Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, appeared delighted with a spot of international royal rivalry as the pair chatted animatedly ahead of the match.

While his Danish counterpart dressed down in an open-necked shirt,William wore a navy suit and striped tie.

Rio Ferdinand,in the BBC studio alongside Gary Lineker, said: “They look chilled, they look relaxed, man. Shirt undone – I love that.”

The Prince of Wales then posed for a picture with King Frederik and his daughter Princess Josephine. The post, shared to X shortly after the 5pm kick-off for the England versus Denmark game, said: “May the best team win.”

The three Wales children did not join their father for the school-night match, although all are thought to be football fans who may have watched on television instead. The Princess of Wales is still away from public duties while she continues her treatment for cancer.

Prince William flew to Germany to see Gareth Southgate’s side in their second group stage match the day before his 42nd birthday, one of hundreds of thousands of England fans travelling for the Euro 2024 championship, which kicked off on June 14.

Before the England squad left for Germany, the Prince,a passionate Aston Villa fan, made a surprise visit to St George’s Park,England’s national football centre in Burton upon Trent.

The Prince presented the team with shirts and shared his youngest son’s advice for success. Prince Louis suggested the players “eat twice the amount” they usually do.

Frederik,56,became King less than a year ago after the surprise abdication of his mother Queen Margrethe II. He is married to an Australian woman with Scottish parents, now known as Queen Mary, who has been widely compared to the Princess of Wales for their similar appearance and former commoner status.

In 2011,the two couples undertook joint engagements in Denmark, including at the UNICEF emergency supply centre which at the time was providing aid in Somalia during a famine.

In 2022,the Princess made a solo visit to Denmark focusing on her early years project, spending time with Queen Margrethe and Crown Princess Mary.
