Tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) due to come into effect next year will be avoided after the UK and EU agreed to extend trade rules.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the news today, saying existing regulations will now run until the end of 2026.
Rules of origin requirements, which state that an EV must include a minimum level of EU or UK manufactured content, were due to take effect from January 1, 2024. Under the proposed rules, tariffs of 10% would have been imposed on car sales between the UK and the EU if the vehicle did not meet the local content requirements. More via The Manufacturer
Rolls-Royce has announced it has started a new set of ground-breaking hydrogen research tests.
Both Rolls-Royce and its partner easyJet are committed to being at the forefront of the development of hydrogen combustion engine technology capable of powering a range of aircraft, including those in the narrowbody market segment, from the mid-2030s onwards. More via Rolls-Royce
German utility RWE on Thursday said it would acquire three offshore wind projects off the English coast from Sweden’s Vattenfall (VATN.UL) in a deal that values the assets at 963 million pounds ($1.2bn).
The UK Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone portfolio consists of three 1.4 gigawatt projects, RWE said. The transaction was expected to close during the first quarter of 2024, it said. More via Reuters
SsangYong Motors UK has been renamed KGM Motors UK with immediate effect.
The move follows the acquisition of SsangYong last year by South Korea’s KG Group, following an attempt by Edison Motors to buy it early last year falling through after Edison failed to fully pay for the manufacturer, which was saddled with heavy debts. More via Car Dealer Magazine
Leeds based spring manufacturer and components supplier to the mattress and furniture industry, Spinks, has secured a £250k research contract to bring its ‘revolutionary’ EcoSeat spring technology to UK rail seating.
The research contract is being awarded by the Department for Transport and the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, through the ‘First of a Kind’ (FOAK) 2023 funded research competition, and will be used to bring Spinks’ ‘innovative’ pocket spring technology to the railway industry with the aim of improving overall passenger comfort and experience. BAE Systems has received a follow-on contract to continue supporting Air Traffic Control & Landing Systems Operations Onboard Navy Ship and Shore Based Sites (AOOSS).
The five-year indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, valued at $92 million, was awarded by the U.S. Navy Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD). More via BAE Systems
