Sanya:MergingSustainableDevelopmentwithTourism—MakingTravelGreener

Aug 29, 2024 Sports IDOPRESS

As global tourism evolves, travelers' awareness of ecological and environmental issues is growing. “Sustainable travel” has become a new standard for tourism consumption both domestically and internationally. In this context, the upcoming 9th TPO Forum in Sanya, themed "Open Cooperation ・ Innovative Development, Building Sustainable Tourism Destinations," has garnered significant attention and discussion from global tourism professionals.

As a member of the TPO Committee, Sanya is proactively integrating sustainable tourism concepts into urban development through creative initiatives. Since 2019, the city has been committed to becoming a "zero-waste city," establishing three zero-waste tourism routes in key areas like the Sanya West Island Marine Culture Tourism Zone, Luhuitou Scenic Area, and Wuzhizhou Island Tourism Zone. These efforts aim to merge coastal tourism with ecological conservation. Additionally, Sanya has established 13 "zero-waste scenic spots" and 38 "zero-waste hotels," creating a development model where 3A-rated scenic spots and four-star and above hotels are covered under zero-waste principles.

【Sanya’s One Hotel in Haitang Bay】

The One Hotel in Haitang Bay is a model of environmental innovation. Its design features locally sourced volcanic stone and traditional blue bricks and black tiles, evoking a natural, rustic feel in the lobby. The hotel incorporates green walls with automatic irrigation and ample natural light, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Recycled materials are visible throughout, from garden landscapes to wall panels, corridors, and even elevators. The hotel also implements eco-friendly measures like card holders made from recycled wood, paper hangers, and wine-bottle water cups, actively promoting sustainability.

【Coral Reef Restoration in Wuzhizhou Island Tourism Zone 】

Sanya has achieved remarkable progress in marine ecological protection. Since 2016, Wuzhizhou Island Tourism Zone has collaborated with the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology to create coral nurseries. These efforts involve transplanting and conserving coral reefs, effectively "planting trees" underwater. Over 35,000 corals have been restored across nearly 50,000 square meters, providing a vast habitat for marine life. The "Guardians of the Coral Sea" initiative further protects and restores damaged coral reef ecosystems.

To promote a carbon-neutral and environmentally friendly future, Sanya is actively engaging in environmental activities. On the evening of March 23, 2024, the city participated in Earth Hour, with individuals, communities, business districts, and enterprises across Sanya joining the cause. The event garnered nearly 5,000 online views and saw about 8,000 participants, including students, residents, and tourists, along with over 500 businesses taking part.

Sanya is steadily advancing on the path to becoming a sustainable tourism destination. Here, visitors can enjoy the azure sea and blue skies while embracing green travel practices, experiencing Sanya's vast potential for sustainable tourism, and ensuring that each journey is a harmonious and enriching experience with nature.
